Betsy DeVos wants your child to work for her. Or rather, for her God. (“Our desire is to confront the culture in ways that will continue to advance God’s kingdom.“)
DeVos is the current Secretary of Education. (Lonnie Scott said the nomination “proves that having a shortage of experience means nothing as long you don’t have a shortage of money.”) She is a former board member of the Acton Institute. If you are not familiar with that name, let me help you. The Acton Institute (for the Study of Religion and Liberty) is named after the English historian, Lord John Acton (1834-1902). He is best known for saying, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (Personally, this feels like a goal of theirs, not a warning.)
I mention the Acton Institute because of an article I read a few months ago. It led me down a wormhole that taught me the phrases “dark money” and “Dominion Theology” among others just as foreboding. When I read this article first it was still titled ‘Bring Back Child Labor‘, but the author amended it in case that sounded like an endorsement for child labor (!) according to the disclosure. ‘Work: A Gift Our Kids Can Handle‘ is only slightly less alarming as a title. Mind you, DeVos Did not write this, she funded and supervised the group who facilitated the author.
“Whatever else you want to say about this, it’s an exciting life. You can talk about the dangers of coal mining or selling newspapers on the street. But let’s not pretend that danger is something that every young teen wants to avoid. If you doubt it, head over the stadium for the middle school football game in your local community, or have a look at the wrestling or gymnastic team’s antics at the gym.”
“The more freedom and opportunity people have been given to orient their work toward God and neighbor, the more we have seen them rise from poverty in all its forms.”
Work will set you free!! (Auschwitz Extermination Camp, Oświęcim, Poland)
Devos is also a huge advocate for school voucher programs. Essentially these vouchers reimburse parents who pay for private or charter school enrollment for their children. This leaves low-income families and middle class families that have no savings with public school as their only option. (Unless they choose to homeschool, and some states have even moved to include homeschooling in their voucher programs, despite arguments against them.) Private and Charter schools can and do operate with religion at the forefront of their existence.
If you follow the money, you will be able to see the steps leading to the evolution of a “Christian Nation” starting with the children. If you can not get your children out of public schools because of financial issues, what better way to rectify those than by “letting” your children work and supplement your family with a much needed stipend? (You could also completely undermine the life of a foster child, or children, for more profit than you currently make as a foster parent! Anti abortion legislation is paving the way for a flood of unwanted American children to be born as a workforce!)
“School Choice” is a distraction. Betsy DeVos is a talking head with a big wallet. Even if you are Christian and Pro-Life, you have a reason to be afraid of this Administration.
